Justin Langer Backs Shaun Marsh For Middle-Order Spot On India Tour

Justin Langer has said Australia should to look to slot Shaun Marsh at No. 6 as he feels his sub-continent experience would come handy during the challenging four-match Test series against India, which starts on February 23 in Pune.

“It depends on which balance they go for, how Australia wants to line up. If they go the traditional XI you’d pick Shaun because of his record in not only the subcontinent but for Australia,” Langer was quoted as saying by AAP.

The 33-year-old left-handed top-order batsman Marsh, who has been named in the 16-member Australian squad for India tour, has played three Tests in Asian conditions so far and scored 393 runs at a phenomenal average of 78.60, with two centuries and a half-century.

It’s the first time that Marsh, who is considered as the best fit in middle-order, is touring India to feature in the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

Banking on his sub-continent performance, Langer believes Marsh deserves to be in the Test side.

“He deserves to play, Shaun deserves to play in the test match. Even before his injury, he deserved to play,” Langer said.

Last year against Sri Lanka, Marsh broke his left-hand finger during the fielding in the third One-Day International of the five match series.

He then returned in the three-match Test series against South Africa before aggravating the finger injury while playing the first Test in Perth. He was eventually ruled out of the remainder of the series.

Marsh has played seven Tests against India, where he has scored 271 runs at an average of 22.58. His best score is 99 off 215 balls, which came in Melbourne during the Border-Gavaskar trophy in December 2014.

Shaun Marsh’s Test career best of 182 off 266 balls came at Hobart against the West Indies in 2015.

Marsh, who made his Test debut in 2011 against Sri Lanka, averages 40.15 in 19 Tests, in which he has amassed 1,325 runs.
