Indian cricket team could have a new coaching staff soon, especially after the team fell short at the semi-final stage of the World Cup for the second consecutive occasion. Had the team won the tournament, coaching staff headed by Ravi Shastri could have stayed for long but now, it seems like BCCI will begin the process of appointing new coaches soon.

As the things stand, Ravi Shastri and his staff will travel to the West Indies and during the same tour, BCCI will begin the process of appointing new coaches. The present staff will be given an automatic entry but it is unlikely that all the coaches will stay.

This time, the committee of appointing coaches might also see an overhaul. As per a report in Mumbai Mirror, former World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev might be given the responsibility to appoint a new coach. Kapil and Shastri were teammates in team India’s 1983 triumph.

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will also consist of veterans Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy. The same committee had appointed WV Raman as the head coach of women’s team last year. The legends of the game might be asked to do the same job again, albeit for the men’s team.

The CAC consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman is almost non-existent due to conflict of interest issues. All the three players are associated with IPL teams and are also part of CAC, that raises the conflict of interest. There is no clarity over the role of CAC as well as it only comes in existence when team India needs a new coach.

The committee was formed in 2015 and did their first job in 2016 when the members named Anil Kumble as the head coach. After Kumble, the committee named Ravi Shastri as the coach and his contract ended after World Cup.

But just like the last occasion, the current coaching panel has been given an extension till the time a new coach is appointed.

It remains to be seen if CAC headed by Kapil Dev will be involved in the process and if they take the job, whether Shastri will get an extension or will a new face take over the job.

India play West Indies in a full-fledged series starting next month and the present coaching staff will travel to the Caribbean islands with the team.
