Kapil Dev urges people to stop judging all-rounders before they play at least 50 Tests

Ever since the legendary Kapil Dev hanged his boots, the Indian team has not found an able replacement for the great all-rounder. The likes of Irfan Pathan, Manoj Prabhakar showed promise early on but failed to perform for a longer time at the highest level like their illustrious predecessor. Ravichandran Ashwin is the latest player who is seen as the man who can end India’s long wait for a good all-rounder. Ashwin is currently the highest ranked all-rounder in the world but Kapil Dev has said that said that all-rounders in international cricket should only be compared after playing 50 Test matches in his career.

“I think, people should give a cricketer 50 Test matches before putting him into the race of being the best all-rounder. Somebody you are talking about and comparing with after two or three series is unfair,” Kapil said at the inauguration of the 2nd Krishapatnam Port Golden Eagles Golf Championship.

Praising the current all-rounders, the World Cup-winning captain said:“Hadlee, myself, Imran and Botham should forget our time and look at the present times. These young boys are very very talented. They are doing far better than us. So we should respect this generation.”

When the retired cricketer was asked about who is the best seam bowling all-rounder, Kapil Dev jokingly said: “I am the last one (best allrounder). That’s it.”

“But, it will be unfair to single out one current player to say he is the best all-rounder, who could be in the league of Ian Botham, Imran Khan, and Sir Richard Hadlee,” he said on a serious note.

When he was asked to make a prediction on the upcoming Test series between India and New Zealand, he said:“I don’t make any prediction. I always went out and played my game. I would like to see what approach both teams adopt in the first Test. It is very difficult to say. Anything can happen. I know more about my team but I don’t know much about the opposition so it will not be right on my part to make any comments.”
