Chamara Kapugedera Confident Of Winning A Game Against India

Sri Lanka finally showed some resistance against an Indian side in the ongoing ODI series. Even though the Lankans lost the second ODI, the Lankan bowlers still gave some fight to the Indian batsmen. Unlike the Test series, where the Indian team faced no resistance or fight by the Lankans, the One Day series has been a bit more competitive affair.

Sri Lanka’s stand-in Captain Chamara Kapugedera who replaced Upul Tharanga as he is suspended due to slow over-rate in the 2nd ODI believes that the fighting effort in the second ODI has given the team the belief that they can win a match in the ongoing series. Kapugedera said that the team has found the lost momentum, even though the team is winless in the series.

Kapugedera said: “I don’t think we are struggling. I think there is a good atmosphere in the team. The way we played we are having a lot of confidence. Everyone is together and hopefully, we can pull off one win. After the last game, we believe that we can win. We played really well.”

Kapugedera is optimistic about the team’s internal environment and believes that a fighting performance by Akila Dananjaya(6-48 in 9 overs) has infused new life in the Sri Lankan team.

“One hurdle we have to overcome and things will fall in line. We are disappointed to lose the last game. But we need to take all the positives from it as well. We don’t want to take any negatives. We need to take positives. Hopefully, the guys will come up and do the job,” he added.

On leading the national side for the first time in his career he said:

“I have captained my school teams and I have captained Provincial and club teams. I have captained at every domestic competition. It is a huge honor for me to captain my country. I am really happy to get this opportunity; it’s a challenge for me. Every game is a challenge and I am ready for that challenge. As a team, we discussed a lot of things. Whatever we spoke we need to put them into practice.”

The Sri Lankan side has made two changes to their squad, Danushka Gunathilaka, and Upul Tharanga being dropped from the squad due to injury and a ban respectively. Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have been named their replacements.

“Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne came into the squad due to injury to Danushka Gunathilaka and ban of Upul. The last game whatever the changes we did that was based on our plans. We are not looking at all the remaining three games, but our main focus is winning the next game and to find a winning combination for the next game,” he said.

On qualifying for the World Cup Kapugedera said:

“I am not saying that those are things that matter, but more than any of those, what we are focusing on is what we need to do to win tomorrow’s game. We don’t want to look too much forward. Winning the next game is the most important thing for us.”
