South Africa all-rounder David Wiese is reportedly the latest Proteas player in line to sign a Kolpak deal with English county outfit Sussex.
South Africa cricket has been rocked by the latest fad among their cricketers who are looking to pursue a career in England to ensure a stability and security. Just a couple of days ago, two of their regular players Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw ended their international careers to sign Kolpak deals for Hampshire. Stiaan van Zyl, Simon Harmer and Hardus Viljoen are already plying their trade with the English counties as South Africa is fearing the worst in the coming days.
Wiese was an important part of South Africa’s T20 team and played three matches during the last World T20 in India. Known as a good finisher in the shortest format of the game, the 31-year-old was a consistent performer for the Titans during their successful defence of the T20 Challenge. He also had an impressive short stint with Sussex during the Natwest T20 Blast last year.
ESPNcricinfo has reported that the all-rounder has already informed Titans that he is looking for a Kolpak deal. However, Titans’ CEO CEO Jacques Faul said they have “no official confirmation” about it.
Meanwhile, South Africa Test opener Stephen Cook is also close to agreeing a deal with Durham. However, the right-handed batsman is not looking for a Kolpak contract and will only feature as an overseas player.
