Pakistan has managed to overtake West Indies as they have now achieved the eighth position after their dominant display against the Caribbean side. The hosts whitewashed West Indies in a recently concluded series by 3-0.
The Pakistan team were eyeing to be in top eight for some time as that would provide them automatic qualification for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 in England. The top seven teams as per the rankings alongside England will get an automatic qualification for the next world cup as other teams will battle out to participate in the next biggest event of cricket.
Before the start of the series, Pakistan had 86 rating points while West Indies had 94 rating points. But after a woeful performance by West Indies they lost six rating points while Pakistan gained three rating points to manage an eighth position in the recently released rankings.
Meanwhile, South Africa who dominated the No.1 ranked side Australia as they have won the series 3-0 with still two games to left has clinched the second spot as they leapfrogged New Zealand by one rating point to the second position.
Australia who went into the series with a nine rating point difference at the top has lost a few rating points. However, they still maintain a six-point gap at the top. Should South Africa whitewash the series, they will reduce the difference to two rating points.
However, if Australia manages to win the remaining two games in the series, then they will hold their grip on top position while South Africa will be back to No.3. India retained their No.4 position in the recently released rankings.
Bangladesh who are currently No.7 in the rankings has a chance to become No.6 if they manage to beat England 3-0 in the upcoming ODI series at home which could prove significant for them as they eye an automatic qualification for the 2019 ICC World Cup.
