Limited-Over Specialists Asked to Avoid Playing Ranji Trophy: Reports

There was a bit of surprise when players like Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal didn’t turn up for their Ranji Trophy teams in the previous round.
While it got confirmed that they would be playing the tournament, BCCI barred them from playing domestic cricket to give them ample rest before the start of the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.

These three players along with Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya are undergoing rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.
“Chahal had asked for permission to play for Haryana but he was not allowed to do so by the team management. Instead, he was asked to stay back at NCA after the T20I series against New Zealand a fortnight ago. The idea is to preserve these players. They have been doing well for the ODI team and there’s no point in burning them out or risking injuries by playing domestic matches,” a BCCI official told TOI.
The comeback of Chahal, Bumrah, Axar in the limited-overs squad will also mean senior players like R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja might get dropped once the Test series is over.
After the appointment of Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach of the side, the team management has changed rules and has decided to make a separate team for Test and limited-overs format, as it looks. There are only a few players who play in all the three formats. Bowlers are taken special care off by the team management, and they are given extra rest, just like we have seen in case of Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav.
Firstly, they got excluded from the playing XI and were then kept out of the 15-member squad as well.

However, the case of Ashwin and Jadeja is quite a curious one, and it looks like the team management is searching for the young crop in the limited-overs format. The reason of which why Jadeja wasn’t given a chance in the first three ODIs of the series against Australia even when he was a part of the squad in place of injured Axar Patel.
Selectors are expected to announce the squad for the third Test and limited-overs series against Sri Lanka after the end of the second Test. The ODI regulars will surely make a comeback in the team, and it would be interesting to see the case of Ashwin and Jadeja along with Shami and Umesh Yadav.
