Match-Fixers Should Be Given ‘Death Penalty’: Javed Miandad

Match-Fixing and spot-fixing have been cricket’s evil friend from long now, and former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad feels time to stab it has arrived. Fixing has often spoiled game’s restored integrity and harmed the reputation of many players, of which Miandad was also one, allegedly.

Speaking about the same, Miandad said those who are found guilty shouldn’t be spared and rather should be punished with a death penalty. Uttering such harsh words might sound unpleasing in the first go but that makes sense, given the number of players who have been caught being involved in such ill-treatment of the game recently.

The matter of concern is how to stop them, and Miandad feels making them serve severe punishments, like the capital punishment can help the cause.

“Authorities must take measures to stop this [corruption in cricket]. Why don’t you take strong measures? You should give death penalty to such people. We must not tolerate such things, not at all.”

Recently, five players were suspected of being involved in spot-fixing in PSL 2017, and were suspended from participating in any form of cricket. To make sure such events don’t happen again, and by the virtue of that the talent doesn’t get wasted, strict actions should be lined-up for them.

Not only Miandad, former bowling great Abdul Qadir too vouched for a dreadful action by saying players like Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Danish Kaneria would have never dared to bring bad name to the country had the earlier suspected ones or even those who were caught, were punished.

“Had you hanged Wasim Akram, Inzamam, Mushtaq Ahmed – there’s an entire list – instead of giving them a slap on the wrist, what’s happening now would’ve never happened.”

Also, retired Pakistan international Shahid Afridi too called for an un-lenient course of action and said thinking has been the root-cause of the issue. Earlier, he said players take such risks knowing they’ll be forgiven and will be brought back into the squad someday. This will not help curb the haunting scenario in sports and things will only get worse if not taken seriously, too soon.

“Until an example is set, this issue will continue. When a player knows he will be forgiven and brought back into the national fold after four or five years, there isn’t any fear or deterrence.”
