Matt Renshaw Faces Spin Test At Home To Gear Up For India Tour

As Australia’s India tour is nearing for the four-match Test series next month, the Kangaroos are trying hard to come up with the best of the preparations their players could get after hiring Englishman Monty Panesar as a spin consultant, which according to the team officials would be effective guide-in-a-side for Australia spinners in the spin-friendly conditions of sub- continent.

“It’s quite challenging, (the wicket) probably would be a bit harder than what we’re going to get in India,” Renshaw said.

The 20-year-old Renshaw has been practicing on a tailor-made spin-friendly wicket with former England spinner Monty and slow left-arm orthodox spinner Steve O’Keefe in Brisbane.

“But that’s the point of practice. You practise harder than it is and you go over there and it’s probably a bit easier. I think we’ll be pretty confident. We’re all excited and looking forward to the challenge that is India and, hopefully, we can knock them off on their home ground,” Renshaw added.

The 34-year-old Panesar’s was hired by Cricket Australia to give vital tips to slow bowlers and prepare their batsman before coming to India for the Border-Gavaskar Test series.

While sending down number of overs to rookie Renshaw, O’Keefe believes the left-handed batsman is facing the spin well and he further requires to spend more time on dusty surfaces to earn rewards.

“It does feel a bit like the last time I was in India. It was Chennai – it was quite humid like this. This is playing plenty of tricks, this wicket. Matt and myself are getting plenty out of it,” O’Keefe said.

However, O’Keefe also expressed that Renshaw is adapting the things quickly which is a good sign for Australia.

“He’s a sponge. He’s pretty quiet off the field, a bit quirky at times but, in the cricketing sense, he’s developing skills as a 20-year-old that 30-year-olds would love to have. As we’ve seen on the international stage, he tends to adapt pretty quickly,” O’Keefe added on Renshaw.

Luton-born Panesar picked 17 wickets when he was a part of England’s four-match Test series against India in 2012, where the visitors won 2-1.

Renshaw has played four Tests for Australia in which he has scored 315 runs at an average of 63. His career best 184 came against Pakistan at the Sydney.
