Mayank Agarwal smashed an unbeaten 99 runs in 58 balls on his captaincy debut as he helped his team Punjab Kings post 166/6 in 20 overs. Mayank Agarwal’s unbeaten 99 is the 2nd best score on a captaincy debut in IPL, only next to Rajasthan Royals’ Sanju Samson score of 119 which he had scored against PBKS this season.

Mayank Agarwal, who had missed out on Punjab Kings’ previous encounter against Royal Challengers Bangalore due to injury, was named as the captain of the team on Sunday. PBKS captain KL Rahul, who had scored an unbeaten 91 against RCB, was rushed to a hospital in Mumbai after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis, and Mayank Agarwal was named as his replacement.

Mayank Agarwal Praised By Kevin Pietersen For His Unbeaten 99

On his captaincy debut, Mayank Agarwal scored an unbeaten 99 as his efforts saw Punjab Kings score 166/6 but it went in vain as Delhi Capitals won the match by 7 wickets as Delhi opener Shikhar Dhawan scored an unbeaten 69. Speaking after Punjab’s innings, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen praised stand-in skipper Mayank Agarwal for not letting the nerves affect his performance.

“I think I said on commentary that captaincy can go one of two ways. You can either deal with it, that weight of expectations that clearly is just thrown straight amongst what you got to do for your team. It can create pressure, you start to worry about your players, your team,” Pietersen said on Star Sports.

“He also did not play the previous game and KL Rahul did so well so there has been so much pressure leading into this game. Yes, he has been playing so well and he is a quality player. But sometimes you do question yourself,” he added.

“But I tell you what, he may have questioned himself before the game, but there is no more question to answer. When you go out and play an innings like he has just played here for all of us to see. It is just breathtaking,” he signed off.

Delhi Capitals (DC) moved to the top of the points table after beating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 7 wickets in Match 29 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Shikhar Dhawan Scores An Unbeaten 69 As Delhi Wins

Shikhar Dhawan scored a terrific unbeaten 69 as DC chased down the target with 2 overs to spare after the bowlers restricted PBKS to a total of 166.  Earlier, PBKS, who were put in to bat first, were playing without the services of skipper KL Rahul after the batsman was ruled out of the game after he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Mayank Agarwal captained the side in KL Rahul’s absence.

Shikhar Dhawan’s delightful 69 dwarfed MOM Mayank Agarwal’s unbeaten 99 as Delhi Capitals defeated Punjab Kings by seven wickets in the IPL 2021 on Sunday to go atop the points table. The destructive opening duo of Prithvi Shaw (39 off 22) and Shikhar Dhawan (69 not out off 47) gave another flying start to Delhi who raced to 63 for no loss in only six overs.

After Prithvi Shaw’s dismissal, Punjab was able to bring down the scoring rate by conceding almost run-a-ball from over 7 to 10. However, they also needed regular wickets to keep themselves in the game but that never came. Following Steve Smith’s downfall, Shikhar Dhawan stepped on the accelerator and there was no stopping Delhi as in the end West Indian batsman Shimron Hetmyer (16 off 4) smashed two sixes and a four in the 18th over to take DC home with 14 balls to spare.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals: 167/3 (Shikhar Dhawan 69*, Prithvi Shaw 39; Chris Jordan 1/21) beat Punjab Kings 166/6 (Mayank Agarwal 99*, Dawid Malan 26; Kagiso Rabada 3/36) by 7 wickets.
