Raring To Go Mayank Agarwal Sets Sights On IPL 2020 To Perk Up His Game

The experienced campaigner Mayank Agarwal, who represents KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), is keen to improve his game during the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). So far, Agarwal had struggled in the IPL.

The top-order batsman Agarwal asserted that they had been discussing their gameplan during the extended lockdown due to the unprecedented COVID-19 challenges.

The Bengaluru-born Agarwal made his IPL debut in 2011 — and there on he had featured in 77 matches. Agarwal has a wealth of experience on his back to yield desired results in the impending IPL despite not doing well in the celebrated league given to the number of chances he has been given in the league.

In 72 IPL innings, Agarwal had amassed 1266 runs at an unhealthy average of 18.3. Besides, he has five fifties to his name in the lucrative league.

“We’ve been speaking about that (IPL form) even during the lockdown. Anil [Kumble] bhai told me the areas I can improve,” Mayank Agarwal told Hindustan Times.

Agarwal, 29, further remarked that they had watched videos while speaking about how he could convert his starts into big and matching-winning scores.

“We got down to watching (a) lot of videos and (he) opened up different perspectives in my game on the field – figuring out how to turn those 40s, 50s into bigger scores and some other starts into match-winning knocks,” Agarwal maintained.

While shedding light on the Twenty20 cricket, Agarwal addressed that the shortest version of the game is about taking risks more often than not to make things count. He further added there is a slight room for error in the competitive cricket

“In T20s you need explosive power, but it’s not just a power game. In competitive cricket margin of error is anyway less. If you make a mistake the other teams are ready to pounce on that. There is always risk involved, just that in T20s you have to take those risks a little more often,” Agarwal stated.

Whereas, while speaking about the Test format, Agarwal said that the entire focus is on playing for an extended time to prove the mettle.

“Test cricket is an altogether different format; the focus is on batting for longer periods,” Agarwal added.

Pertinently, since Agarwal’s emergence into Test fold in 2018 — he had done incredibly well while averaging 57.3 in 11 Tests. He had three tons and four half-centuries under his belt. Mayank Agarwal also became second-fast batter to slam two double-tons.

In 2019, Mayank Agarwal has been sent at number three as Chris Gayle opened an innings alongside KL Rahul.

Agarwal added that the management has not decided anything regarding his batting position — and he is looking forward to doing well in the impending edition of the IPL 2020. He believes there is a need to go into the detailing ahead of the competition which is less than two weeks away to kick-off.

“Till the game starts, it’s not decided where I will be batting. I am really looking forward to this tournament. We have had some time to prepare in Bangalore as well as here. We still need to sit and talk; we need to go through each role and the position I’m going to bat,” Mayank Agarwal concluded.

The Mohali-based franchise will face-off Delhi Capitals (DC) on September 20 at Dubai International Stadium.
