MCA Delays Scholarship Reward Entitled To Pranav Dhanavade

The Story:

Pranav Dhanawade, the teenage cricketer from Mumbai known as the 1000 run hero, has been undergoing some rough time since claiming the headlines back in 2016.

The right-handed schoolboy entered the record books for scoring 1009 runs playing for the KC Gandhi School against Arya Gurukul School in a U-16 match in the Bhandari Cup, an under-16 inter-school tournament recognised by the Mumbai Cricket Association at Kalyan.

His knock stretched for two days from January 4 till the next day and came from just 327 balls and helped him break the 116-year-old record of 628 not out, set by the English schoolboy A. E. J. Collins in 1899.

His knock created the storm in the media and local cricketing circles. Subsequently, appreciation and rewards followed in for the young boy. Vinod Tawde, Minister of Sport for Maharashtra, declared that the state government will bear Dhanawade’s future educational and coaching expenses. He was also congratulated by MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar for this amazing feat.

Mumbai Cricket Association Announces Scholarship

Pranav was later awarded a scholarship from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). They announced a Rs. 10, 000 monthly scholarship for Dhanawade for five years. But, there was also a condition that his performance will be reviewed from the second year onwards before the money being granted.

The Association in its statement had said that they will “monitor the cricketing and educational activities of the youngster for the said period”.

No Money Received

Dhanawade’s family has not yet received any grant from the Association for this year.

Already six months have passed this year and we have no clue what the MCA has decided,” Dhanawade’s father Prashant told HT.

“We have not approached the MCA because I don’t know whom to contact there. We don’t know whether it’s because of some delay or they have taken a decision to discontinue the scholarship.”

MCA joint secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar has defended the Association stating that the performance review hasn’t taken place yet and the money shall be released once necessary norms are completed.

“When the scholarship was awarded, it was mentioned that the MCA will review his performance after every season before proceeding for next season’s scholarship. The review has not yet taken place. Once it is done, it will be placed before the managing committee to take a call on whether to continue or not,” MCA joint secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar told Hindustan Times.

The 17-year-old has not made any noticeable performance since ‘that’ day under the limelight. He was one of the 78 players selected for MCA U-19 selection trials but he failed to break into the 35 shortlisted name for the U-19 off-season training camp at the Bandra Kurla Complex ground.

Coach Mobin Shaikh had even dropped Dhanawade during a MCA selection trials match recently.

“He has been keeping the wickets well, but he needs to put in a lot of effort in his batting. That is why I have sent him to Bangalore to practice in the off-season. He is then scheduled to go to England for a cricket tour organised by Dilip Vengsarkar,” he said.

“Hopefully, he gets good experience which can be utilised when the season starts. This year is going to be crucial. I have told him to take his non-selection for the training camp in a positive way and work even harder.”

Apart from the financial strain, it is the dearth of a proper practice arena that Dhanawade is struggling for.

“The wickets on which the boys’ practice are not proper. It hampers the state of the balls and bats. If we have a proper wicket here, it will be very helpful to the players,” said Mobin.
