MI vs DC highlights: Mumbai Indians (MI), on Sunday (April 7), beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by 29 runs to get off the mark in IPL 2024. Set a target of 235, DC finished their innings on 205/8 despite a whirlwind 25-ball 71 runs knock from Tristan Stubbs.

DC’s chase was off to a shaky start as David Warner was dismissed for 10 runs by Romario Shepherd in the fourth over. At the end of the powerplay, DC were on 46 for 1. Prithvi Shaw broke the shackles in the eighth over by hitting Mohammad Nabi for two fours and a six. In the ninth over, he hit two more fours while Abishek Porel hit one against Gerald Coetzee.

At the end of the tenth over, DC were on 94 for 1. And just when it looked like DC could claw their way back into the game, Jasprit Bumrah castled Prithvi Shaw with a toe-crushing yorker in the 12th over. The opening batsman departed after scoring 66 off 40.

Tristan Stubbs hit two sixes off Piyush Chawla in the 14th over before Bumrah struck again to remove Porel for 41 and put MI on top. Nine runs later, Coetzee sent back DC skipper Rishabh Pant for just 1 to leave the visitors reeling at 153 for 4 after 16 overs.

At the other hand, Stubbs kept going strong and completed a fine fifty off just 19 balls to keep his team’s slim hopes alive. With an improbable 63 needed from the last three overs, Bumrah bowled a brilliant 18th over, conceding just 8 to all but seal the game. The pacer finished the game with figures of 2 for 22 off 4 overs.

Stubbs eventually remained unbeaten on 71 off 25 balls and did not even get the strike in the final over as DC finished on 205/8.

MI vs DC: MI innings

Earlier in the game, MI posted a huge total of 234/5 after being asked to bat first. Former captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan laid the foundation for the big total by adding 80 runs in seven overs for the first wicket.

Axar Patel broke the opening stand by castling Rohit with a beauty to give DC a much-needed breakthrough. The India skipper departed after scoring 49 off 27 balls. One run later, Anrich Nortje struck to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav for a duck. The twin breakthroughs helped DC apply brakes on the scoring rate.

From the eighth to the 15th over, MI could manage to score only 58 runs. During this phase, they also lost the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma. Axar dismissed Ishan for 42 before Khaleel Ahmed sent back Tilak for 6. With just five overs remaining, DC were pretty much on top.

The 200-run mark was looking very tough at that stage. However, MI went on to smash 96 runs in the final five overs to finish on the mammoth total. In the 17th over, both Hardik Pandya and Tim David hit a six each off Khaleel Ahmed to collect 17 runs. In the 18th over, MI lost the wicket of their captain for 39 but managed to score 16 runs.

In the 19th over bowled by Ishant Sharma, David and Romario Shepherd collected 19 runs. Shepherd, who was playing his first game of IPL 2024, went on to hit Nortje for 32 runs in the final over to take his team to 234. He remained unbeaten on 39 off just 10 balls.
