Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Director of Cricket (DOC) Mike Hesson revealed that they had promoted Gurkeerat Singh ahead of Virat Kohli against Kolkata Knight Riders because of two reasons.
While Chasing a below-par 85 runs target, Gurkeerat was sent to bat at number three after Aaron Finch lost his wicket. He scored unbeaten 21 runs, striking four fours and stitched up a partnership with Virat Kohli to guide RCB to victory.
Mike Hesson stated that Gurkeerat Singh was promoted to give him more ball to face. The middle-order batsman had not got enough chances to bat because of the massive contribution from the top-order.
The second reason was that the right-hand batsman is good to face spinners like Varun Chakravarthy.
“It was done to give him some confidence. He is the only one in the top five who didn’t get the chance to bat before the last game. We also knew that if Varun Chakravarthy came in Gurkeerat has the ability to take on the spin,” said Hesson in a video posted on RCB Twitter handle.
Always good to bat with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers: Gurkeerat Singh
Although he has featured in five matches, Gurkeerat has got only two times the opportunity to bat. Before playing against KKR, he built a match-winning partnership with AB de Villiers although his contribution was paltry.
Gurkeerat also said that he had learned a lot while playing alongside AB and Kohli in the field.
“Last time it was with AB sir and now with Virat Bhai. A lot to learn from them and it is always good to bat alongside them and hopefully many more winning moments like this,” said Gurkeerat.
It was a good decision by RCB’s management to give him more exposure as the contest has become more competitive from this points.
Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore are currently at number two position in the points table above Mumbai Indians with 14 points.
