Moeen Ali officially unretired ahead of the Test series after speaking to new coach Brendon McCullum who is said to be having him in the plans for the Test series against Pakistan.
England all-rounder Moeen Ali has backed CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to come good as a leader sometime in the future. India’s top all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, was handed the captaincy by predecessor MS Dhoni days before the Indian Premier League 2022.
The transition of leadership at the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2022 did not work according to plan, as Ravindra Jadeja looked flustered, which ended up affecting his own game. Halfway through the season, Ravindra Jadeja gave up the mantle to his old captain, under whom, CSK fared much better.
MS Dhoni, in a post-match interview, when asked about the whole incident said that captaincy was not everybody’s cup of tea, and Chennai needed ‘player’ Ravindra Jadeja more than they needed the ‘captain’. However, Moeen Ali has backed the idea of Ravindra Jadeja coming good in the future and stated that there isn’t much difference between the two in terms of characteristics.
“He’s (Jadeja) inexperienced in terms of captaincy and leading CSK was tough for him this year because we weren’t playing well as a team. But he has got a good brain and he potentially could be a good leader in the future,” he said.
“I have played under him. I have played under MS Dhoni as well. There is not much difference between both of them in terms of the characteristics – very calm, very loyal to their players. Brilliant captain, brilliant player,” he further added.
Talking about his performance this year, Ravindra Jadeja played 10 games before an injury ended his season. In those 10 games, he scored only 116 runs at an average of 19.33 and a strike rate of 118.37. With the ball, he picked up 5 wickets in 10 games.
Ravindra Jadeja surprisingly stepped down from his role as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain with immediate effect after CSK won only 2 games in the 8 matches he captained in IPL 2022 and handed it over to former CSK captain MS Dhoni for the rest of the IPL 2022 season.
Asked about the impact of England captain Eoin Morgan’s retirement, Moeen Ali was high praises for his 2019 World Cup-winning captain and said that the fearless brand of cricket that are England playing at the moment under Ben Stokes, was started by Eoin Morgan in the white-ball format.
“We were horrendous in white-ball cricket before that (2015 World Cup). He changed the mindset of the players. Actually, the way England is playing now in Test cricket, I believe, is actually because of him. He showed that if you have the mindset, you can play fearless cricket, which we are playing now,” Ali said.
Moeen Ali was part of the England team which hit a record 498 runs against the Netherlands. While he did not get to bat in the game, Moeen Ali managed to pick three wickets from his 10 overs in the second innings.
Born in Dublin, Eoin Morgan moved to England in 2009. But previously he had represented Ireland in the 2007 Cricket World Cup in West Indies where he had a dry run. Eoin Morgan’s decision to switch allegiance paid dividends as he won his first major trophy within a year in West Indies at the 2010 T20 World Cup. Life come to a full circle for this Irish-born cricketer as he went on to win the 2019 World Cup in a close contest with New Zealand which saw a super over.
