Mohammed Shami Becomes Fastest Indian Bowler To 100 ODI Wickets

Unlike his Test career, Mohammed Shami’s One-Day International career was pretty much off the track in recent months. Injury coupled with the emergence of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar made it pretty tough for him to get a regular chance in the ODI team. While he regularly played Tests for India, he managed to play just 5 ODIs after the 2015 World Cup before returning to the team for the just-concluded ODI series in Australia.
However, with the World Cup just a handful of months away, India have given Shami another chance to resurrect his ODI career and he is grabbing the chances with both hands. Shami, on Wednesday, became the quickest Indian pacer to take 100 wickets in the 50-over format. He achieved the feat in the ongoing first ODI against New Zealand in Napier. The right-arm pacer had entered the game with 99 wickets in 55 games. And in his very first over, he castled Martin Guptill to enter the record books.
The record was previously held by Ishant Sharma who reached the milestone in his 59th ODI.
Here is the list of top five quickest Indian pacers to 100 ODI wickets:
Player | Matches |
Mohammed Shami | 56 |
Ishant Sharma | 59 |
Zaheer Khan | 65 |
Ajit Agarkar | 67 |
Javagal Srinath | 68 |
India, meanwhile, have made a strong start in the first ODI. Shami has removed both the New Zealand openers – Guptill and Colin Munro – in quick succession to reduce New Zealand to 18 for 2. India will be riding high on confidence after the historic ODI series win in Australia last week and will be looking to continue their winning run in New Zealand too.
