MS Dhoni’s relationship with Indian coach Anil Kumble goes back a long time. When Kumble announced his retirement from test cricket, it was Dhoni who replaced the leg spinner as India’s test captain. Even when they played together, the two often formed a great partnership as Dhoni’s quick reflexes behind the stumps perfectly complemented the guile in Kumble’s wrist spin.
At a media event, Dhoni was quizzed about his views of leading team India under the coaching of Kumble. India’s limited over skipper was extremely optimistic and said that he was geared up for the task. The Jharkhand lad went on to portray the Indian coach as a profusely aggressive individual, who was successful in all parts of the globe.
“He’s one of the few players, irrespective of the conditions whether it’s assisting spin bowling or not, whether we’re playing in abroad or not, he was somebody who was very aggressive when it comes to his bowling. He was somebody who put in a lot of hard-work who would prepare very well over a period and you know he’s just fantastic,” said Dhoni.
The rapport between Dhoni and Kumble will be extremely significant for India’s fortunes in the shorter format. With the ICC Champions Trophy less than a year away in England, and India going into the tournament as the defending champions, Dhoni will be eager to prove a point or two. A successful tournament next year could well mean an extension for Kumble as India’s head coach till the 2019 World Cup in the same nation.
