Former India skipper and Dilip Vengsarkar feels Mumbai should take the onus of hosting the U-19 ‘Test’ match against England, which was initially scheduled to be played at Chepauk from February 13. However, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has written to the BCCI expressing their inability to host the match.

The TNCA, in its letter to BCCI dated January 6, had said: “We regret to inform you that we are unable to host the matches at Chennai due to various domestic programmes scheduled during that period.”

TNCA joint-secretary RI Palani later told the Times of India that the association is unable to host the match because the grounds are not ready in the aftermath of the Vardah Cyclone.

He had said:“A lot of grounds are not available following Vardah. We have many league and knockout matches to finish before June and it will not be possible to spare the MA Chidambaram Stadium for a period of 15 days after the completion of BCCI tournaments which will also take close to a month.”.

And now Vegsarkar has said Mumbai should step up to host the matches.

Speaking to the Press Trust of India, he said:“As a former captain of India, I feel that if TNCA is unable to host the Under-19 games against England, Mumbai can host it as it has more international venues than any other city in India.”

The former cricketer, who represented India in 116 Tests, also wanted Mumbai as the reserve venue if Hyderabad fails to host the India-Bangladesh Test match starting on February 8.

“I believe cricket should always be the priority. These matches are scheduled a long time ago and hosting them shouldn’t be a problem at all, he concluded.
