New Zealand vs Australia 2017: Aaron Finch Frustrated With Drainage System At Napier

Stand-in Australia captain Aaron Finch was left frustrated with the poor drainage system and soggy outfield at Napier after the second ODI between Australia and New Zealand was called off due to unsafe outfield conditions. Even the toss ceremony couldn’t take place, despite the fact that there was little or no rain after the scheduled time of play i.e. 2 PM local time.

“It was quite a frustrating day. I thought when we turned up, it was obviously a bit soggy and a bit wet, but I thought we’d get a game in at some point.

“But obviously the conditions didn’t improve a hell of a lot.

“There was a good handful (of particularly wet patches) but they were in really key spots – backwards point, cover, square leg – those spots that are hot spots in the field

“Particularly in around the ring it was quite soggy and slippery.

“In Australia, all our AFL venues are very big draining grounds, they drain very quickly.

“I haven’t seen it that slow (to drain) before, but like I said it was just a few key spots that were really wet.

“It was a bit frustrating to be fair – when you’re standing around trying to get back into a series, trying to level it at one-all, it was a bit frustrating,” Finch said.

There were as many as three inspections but every time, the game had to be delayed as the outfield was never fit for play. A good crowd turned out to experience the penultimate game between the two teams but eventually, the game didn’t happen.

It can be called a lost opportunity for Australia as they lost the first game of the three-match series by a margin of just six runs. Marcus Stoinis kept the sinking boat of the team afloat till the end by playing an innings of 146* but an unfortunate run-out in the end helped New Zealand win the game and draw the first blood in the series.

Australia is the current winner of the Chappell-Hadlee trophy by virtue of defeating New Zealand by a margin of 3-0, in the series played last year in December.
