The New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi achieves a rare feat in the first T20I game against India in Auckland. Sodhi took two crucial wickets of India on Friday. Thus, he went on to surpass Pakistan pacer, Umar Gul in a T20I record in terms of bowling against the Men in Blue.
The Kiwi cricketers were, however, defeated by Virat Kohli & Co. by five wickets in the thrilling T20I opener of the month-long tour. The likes of the opener KL Rahul (56), skipper Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer (58) troubled the Black Caps’ bowlers while chasing the 204-runs target with an over to spare.
New Zealand had a good start when Mitchell Santner stopped the Indian ‘HITMAN’, Rohit Sharma (7) within two overs. But the 99-run partnership between Rahul and skipper Kohli had stabled India’s innings. While Rahul scored a stunning half-century, Kohli scored 45 runs before Martin Guptill claimed a stunner in the deep mid-wicket region.
While the Black Caps enjoyed taking out Kohli, all their hopes were shunned by Iyer, who brilliantly finished the game single-handedly. Iyer stroke five fours and three sixes and scored 58 runs off just 29 balls. His brilliant six on the last ball of Tim Southee helped India to go beyond the target score.
Ish Sodhi surpasses Pakistan’s pacer Umar Gul in the T20I record against India:
Nevertheless, it was an interesting start to the month-long cricket schedule. The Kiwi bowler Sodhi remained the most successful bowler of the team as he picked two wickets in the game. Sodhi also attained a feat against India in the shortest version of the game.
Notably, Sodhi has eclipsed Gul in the record of plucking most wickets in the T20Is against the Men in Blue. The leg-spinner took the wickets of Rahul and Shivam Dube on Friday. Hence he became the leading wicket-taker against India in the T20Is.
The 27-year-old spinner now has 13 wickets to his name against India, while Gul has 11 wickets in his bag. The Pakistan pacer is then followed by Shane Watson, Dushmantha Chameera and Mitchell Santner at the third spot with 10 wickets each.
