After playing the T20I and ODI series, India and New Zealand will play the two-match Test series. But before heading to play the Test series, the Team India need to sort out the opening combination. It will not be an easy task for the team management as Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill have performed impressively in recent past.

As Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the series because of a calf injury, Shaw has been recalled to the Test squad after 16 months. Well, Gill was already in the squad as a backup opener. With Mayank Agarwal as a proven opener, the team management will have to select between Gill and Shaw as another opener.

The duo has gathered runs in domestic cricket but they are inexperienced when it comes international cricket. However, Shaw is a bit more experienced than Gill, having already played two Tests and three ODIs compared to his former U19 teammate’s one ODI.

As of now, there is no clarity over who will play in the Test series.

In the recent interview, India’s head coach Ravi Shastri spoke about Shaw and Gill’s performance but didn’t give any leads on who would be the part of Playing XI.

“Both are supremely exciting talents. Regardless of who gets into the XI in Wellington, the fact of the matter is they’re here, part of India’s national squad, and from here on they should know that the sky remains the limit,” Ravi Shastri told The Times of India.

“He’s phenomenally talented. His approach to batting is very clear and he exhibits a very positive mindset. That’s very exciting for a boy who’s just 20 going on 21,” Shastri said of Shubman Gill.

Meanwhile, in the three-day practice match against New Zealand XI, both Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill got out in duck.
