After registering a back-to-back win in the first and second T20I match at Eden Park, India has also registered the win in super over of the third T20I in Hamilton. Thus, the visitors won the series 3-0 with two to go. In the adventurous game, pacer Mohammed Shami’s last majestic over changed the game and led it to super over.
It was the first experience for India to face super over while New Zealand had earlier break it into two times. Unfortunately, New Zealand had to again face the defeat in the super over but this time against India.
New Zealand vs India 2020: India set the target of 180 runs in Hamilton –
Indian opener Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave a good start to the team, setting up an 89-run partnership. Sharma scored 65 runs in 40 balls; smashing six fours and three maximums while Rahul lost his wicket early after scoring 27 runs off 19 balls.
After Rahul lost his wicket, Indian skipper sent Shivam Dube at No.3 but the allrounder could not fulfil the captain’s demand. However, Virat Kohli also could not stand for long as he was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 38 runs. The middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer(17), Manish Pandey (14*) and Ravindra Jadeja(10*) helped India to set the target of 180 for the Kiwis.
The pacer Hamish Bennett was the most successful bowler for New Zealand as he picked the wicket of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shivam Dube. While he also proved to be expensive as Rohit Sharma smashed 26 runs off his five deliveries.
Allrounders, Mitchell Santner and Colin de Grandhome picked one wicket each.
New Zealand vs India 2020: Kane Williamson’s crucial knock at Hamilton in vain –
Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson played a crucial knock for his team. He struck six maximums and seven fours in his powerful knock of 95 runs. Besides, he could not score a hundred as Shami picked his wicket on the third ball of Kiwis last over.
New Zealand opener Martin Guptill (31) and Colin Munro (14) set a small partnership that was broken by Shardul Thakur. While in the middle-order Santner and de Grandhomme scored 5 and 3 runs respectively as they could not set themselves in the field.
Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal picked one wicket each. While it was a bad day for India in the field which saw Jadeja missing a catch and fielding also looked ordinary to some extent.
New Zealand vs India 2020: 3rd T20I, Hamilton: Super over
In the last over of the third T20I, Indian skipper Kohli gave Mohammed Shami the responsibility to the ball when New Zealand needed nine runs. Shami brought India right back into the game. On the last ball of the over, Black Caps neede one run but the pacer picked the wicket of Ross Taylor and it led the game to super over.
Coming to the super over, Virat handed over the ball to the yorker king Bumrah. Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson scored 17 runs off 6 balls. But India ‘s opener Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul reached the total, striking two sixes and one four in the over of Tim Southee.
Interestingly, when India required 10 off two deliveries, Rohit slammed two consecutive sixes to finish the heart-racing thriller in India’s favour.
Now, India has won the series 3-0 though there are still two matches to be played.
