Trent Boult has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa in Wellington, starting March 16.

Boult, who bowled just 15 overs in the second innings of South Africa (in the first Test), suffered a hip strain and a leg injury before leaving the field. He had a limited practice session ahead of the second Test and the management feels he needs some time to get back in shape. Tim Southee has been named Boult’s replacement.

“He has had a big workload with five one-dayers and a big four days in the Test match in Dunedin. Trent being one of the fittest guys in the side does everything he possibly can to keep himself fit, so it’s unfortunate that it has come but I am sure he will be right come Hamilton. There’s still a couple of question marks around a couple of players. I can confirm I’ll come in for Trent and Neil Broom comes in for Rossco. They’ll finalise the rest of the side tomorrow,” Southee revealed.

The first Test of the three-match series at Dunedin ended in a draw after the final day was a wash-out. The Wellington Test starts from March 16 before both teams fly to Hamilton for the final match of the series.
