Sairaj Bahutule, the former Mumbai cricketer who has been appointed the new coach of Bengal, offered question paper on the opening day of his visit to the senior team’s training camp at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. Bahutule came to meet the state cricketers with Ranadeb Bose, the bowling coach of Bengal for this season and immediately after shaking hands with the cricketers, he gave a question paper to each cricketer who was present in the training camp. It has been learnt that approximately ten questions were set by the newly appointed Bengal coach. And it has also been learnt that Bahutule wanted to know from each cricketer about their views on the team’s as well as individual weakness, strength, mental preparation for big championship like Ranji Trophy.
According to a senior Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official, Bahutule had also acquired information from Ranadeb Bose as well as from Bengal’s senior cricketers like Manoj Tiwary, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Sourashish Lahiri also. Bahutule who was at the Eden Gardens from 11 a.m. in the morning till 5 in the evening on Sunday, said afterwards, “I have done all these things only to increase the killers’ instinct of the cricketers. So far I have gathered information from everybody, Bengal’s performance failed to turn up to the level mainly because of the cricketers’ lack of killers’ instinct. I will try to develop this quality.”
Bahutule also informed at the same time that along with trying to motivate the cricketers in Mumbai in a similar fashion, he had proposed a few more constructive plans to the Mumbai Cricket Association top brass when he was given the coach’s chair a few years ago. “But finally, Mumbai Cricket Association officials did not respond,” said Bahutule.
Commenting on the strength of the Bengal team this season, Bahutule looked happy. He clarified, “Bengal is a balanced side. They have a mixture of experience and young quality batsmen. But I feel pace bowling should be the main strike force of Bengal in the forthcoming tournaments this season. And this force will get more support with the presence of experienced left-arm spinner like Pragyan Ojha.
At the end of the day, senior cricketers like Manoj Tiwari, captain of Bengal team this season, Laxmi Ratan Shukla had all praise for their newly appointed coach. They said, “Bahutule has a constructive vision which can lead us to execute our best in the forthcoming tournaments this season.”
