North Eastern Women’s Concede 136 Wides in BCCI U-19 Women’s ODI

It was a horrific performance by the North-Eastern Girls during a BCCI U-19 women’s one day match, as 136 wide balls were bowled between Nagaland and Manipur.

It was a part of the inaugural NE-Bihar which was organised by the cricket board saw Manipur bowling 94 wides while Nagaland conceded 42. Nagaland was the eventual winners by 117 runs, but the bowling performance proved that they need top class coaching facility.

As per reports, there were times that the girls were not even able to land the ball on the 22-yard strip. As per the scorecards available on BCCI Website, Mushkan and Pori who scored 54 and 24, respectively were the only batswomen from the match to get past double figures. The 94 wides bowled by Manipur meant that had to bowl 15.4 extra over and also, the Nagaland girls were able to bat 38 overs.

Manipur was never in the chase and was bundled out for 98 in 27 overs despite the fact that Nagaland conceded 42 wides. Only two players from Manipur managed to get past the double figures. Seterni (17) and Ronibala Thokchom (24) were the two batswomen who reached double figures while Pori bagged five wickets for Nagaland. The venue for the match was the Nehru Stadium in Dhanbad.

“There is always a beginning. As the teams from NE states will play more matches, they will certainly get better. The idea to have a one day league between NE states is to given the exposure to competitive cricket. With state of the art coaching, one can only get better,” Naba Bhattacharjee, the Meghalaya CA top boss and the convenor of NE states, Naba Bhattacharjee was quoted by the BCCI as per reports in the PTI.

The few BCCI officials who were present during the match said that high-level coaching facilities were required. They further stated that it was not only about the wide balls which they bowled, but it was the “wide gap” which needs to be bridged.

“It looks nice to throw these girls at the deep end of the pool but when you are playing a National U-19 championship, just knowing the basics of cricket well won’t suffice. You need to be at least be competitive,” a top BCCI official told PTI on the promise of anonymity.
