Nottinghamshire Confirms Signing of Ravichandran Ashwin, Expected to Play in 6 Division 1 Matches
Premier Team India off-spinner in the longest format of the game, Ravichandran Ashwin is hoping to keep himself fit for the ICC Test Championship and hence he will turn up for Nottinghamshire in the County season. The county club announced the news on Thursday and confirmed that Ashwin will be a part of their team as a replacement for Australian James Pattinson.
The veteran off-spinner will carry out the duty of an overseas player from the end of June. In all likelihood, Ashwin is expected to feature in at least 6 of the 11 red ball matches. It will be the 2nd time that Ravichandran Ashwin will ply his trade in the County Championship. The offie played four games for Worcestershire during the 2017 season. He bagged 20 wickets and also scored 214 runs during the season.
“I’m really looking forward to joining up with Nottinghamshire, to playing cricket at an iconic venue like Trent Bridge and hopefully contributing to some County Championship victories,” Ravichandran Ashwin was quoted as saying by the official website of the county.
“I enjoyed my previous stint in England with Worcestershire. It’s a good, competitive standard of cricket over there and I can’t wait to get started.” Ashwin is expected to play the first match of his stint against Essex on 30th June. It will be followed by matches against Somerset and Surrey. Meanwhile, Ashwin is expected to miss the clash against Yorkshire as it will coincide with India’s tour of Windies. However, he should be back for 3 more matches towards the end of the season.
“We knew what we wanted to sign and that was a world-class bowler,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket, Mick Newell. Whether that was a fast or a slow bowler, we were prepared to look at all options. As it happens, we’ve signed a very good spinner, a very experienced spinner and one we hope can contribute with the bat as well, ”he further added.
“We’ve seen world-class slow bowlers have a huge match-winning effect in county cricket over many years. Ravi certainly has that potential – and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming him to the squad and letting him loose on our opposition.”
Meanwhile Ashwin’s Test teammate Ajinkya Rahane is also making full use of his spare time and is currently playing for Hampshire. He made a sensational start to his county stint smashing a brilliant century while playing for Hampshire. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara is also expected to reach England after the conclusion of the Saurashtra Premier League. He has penned down a three year deal with Yorkshire.
