England team have roped in pacer Brydon Carse as a replacement for Reece Topley. Topley suffered a fractured finger in their recent ICC World Cup 2023 game against South Africa in Mumbai.
Topley was injured when he attempted to stop the ball off his own bowling and ended up leaving the field dissatisfied in Saturday’s game against South Africa in Mumbai. Topley, on the other hand, reappeared later in the innings with taped-up fingers to take two more wickets.
However, scans have shown the depth of the injury, which has forced him to withdraw from the event. Head coach Matthew Mott has already ruled out Jofra Archer as a replacement, despite the fact that he is also in injury rehab and with the group in India.
For Topley, who has suffered numerous setbacks throughout his career, this injury is just the most recent on an awful list. Topley sustained a fluke injury prior to the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia when he fell over an advertisement hoarding during catching practice close to the boundary, injuring his ligament.
He had a series of stress fractures on his back before that, requiring surgery. After that, he had a difficult road to recovery before becoming a crucial member of England’s white-ball team.
“The poor lad, it just doesn’t seem to stop for him. Every time he does extremely well and gets a string of performances together where he’s playing good cricket, he just seems to get a setback,” Joe Root said as per ESPNCricinfo.
Brydon Carse Approved By ICC As Replacement Player
Brydon Carse has been named the replacement for Topley by the England and Wales Cricket Board, and has been approved by the ICC Events Technical Committee. Carse has played 12 ODIs and 3 T20Is for England between 2021 and 2023.
Carse will arrive in Bangalore ahead of England’s match against Sri Lanka on Thursday, although he is unlikely to be considered for selection given that he has not played competitively in four weeks.
After impressing in the T20I series, he appeared in one of England’s four One-Day Internationals against New Zealand last month, and he also played for their second-string team against Ireland.
Carse, 28, was born in South Africa but is a UK passport holder who plays for Durham and Northern Superchargers in domestic cricket.
“He’s a brilliant all-round package. He can score some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and has a unique wicket-taking ability. He’s got that [Ben] Stokes element to him where sometimes, you feel like nothing is happening and he’ll pick up wickets,” Root said.
Brydon Carse will replace Reece Topley in our World Cup squad for the remainder of the tournament.
