Indian World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for his 87-run knock against defending champions England in the marquee event. Despite a tricky wicket in Lucknow, the 36-year-old batted brilliantly to help India post a challenging total in the game.

The Indian team triumphed over England with great style at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The victory was due to the stellar performance of Rohit Sharma, who not only captained the Indian team but also won the Player of the Match award for his fantastic knock under pressure, which eventually helped the Men in Blue to win the game by a margin of 100 runs.

In his column for Khaleej Times, Sunil Gavaskar hailed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for his impressive performance on a challenging wicket and lauded Indian wicket-keeper KL Rahul for stabilizing his innings alongside the Indian captain.

“Rohit Sharma’s innings against England was a captain’s innings worth more than a hundred as he tailored his approach according to the needs of the situation,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“Rahul once again showed how important it is to have an opener batting at number 5 because he could deal with the new ball and stabilize the innings with skipper Sharma. India’s fielding also has been showing steady improvement,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

The Indian team struggled initially in the game, losing their first three wickets quickly before Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul put a partnership in the middle overs of the game to help the Indians post a decent total in the 1st innings before the Men In Blue bowlers bundling out the defending champions for just 129 runs.
