World Cup-winning England skipper Eoin Morgan has raised his concern regarding the morale and mood of the England team after their poor performance in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The defending champions are placed at the bottom of the points table below Bangladesh and the Netherlands

England still has a mathematical chance to place among the top four and go to the semi-final. But now that they have to win their last four games by a wide margin and hope for a host of other favourable outcomes, the challenge has grown difficult but the teams seem to be struggling to find their right team combination, with constant chopping and changing in the game.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Eoin Morgan has expressed concerns about his team’s confidence and morale. He has stated that there is an obvious problem within the team and has questioned their approach in the ODI World Cup. He also asserted that the team’s low confidence can be attributed to their poor performance in the marquee event.

“I’ve never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders. There’s something within the team that is definitely unsettled,”

“The method which they’re trying to use and given the substantial nature in which they’ve lost the game(s). It is definitely called into question, the morale within the changing room and the confidence. It must be at its lowest that it’s been for a considerable period of time now,” Eoin Morgan said.

Four years after winning the 50-over World Cup for the first time, the reigning champions are about to suffer an embarrassing group-stage exit. Jos Buttler and company have only won once, against Bangladesh, having lost four of their previous five matches.

England Are As Good On Paper As Any Other Side In This Tournament – Eoin Morgan

England captain Eoin Morgan believes that his team’s batting lineup is as strong as any in the World Cup. However, the team has not lived up to expectations, and Morgan feels that they made mistakes with team selection. He also thinks that it will be challenging for England to bounce back from their current situation and make the most out of the ongoing tournament.

“When you look at the strength in depth, particularly with the bat, England are as good on paper as any other side in this tournament, but they haven’t yet fired,” Morgan added.

“They’ve made mistakes with selection. They’ve really struggled to find a balanced side and one that’s effective enough to compete, never mind win this tournament. It’s been unbelievably challenging for Jos and his team they have to regain the confidence in the method that they’ve used for so long that has made them double world champions,” Eoin Morgan concluded.

Jos Buttler, who took over as captain after Morgan’s retirement last summer, is relatively new to the role. Despite England’s poor performance in the current tournament, the England Cricket Board is likely to support Buttler as he looks to lead the team to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
