On Gary Kirsten’s 50th Birthday, Nostalgic Virender Sehwag Wished Him

One of the greatest batsmen to don the green and yellow colours of South Africa, Gary Kirsten turned a year older yesterday on 23rd November. As the legendary left-hander stepped into his 50th year, wishes all across the globe flooded his Twitter account.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was one of them. The destructive opener is a massively active personality on social media platform Twitter and continues to entertain us, as he used to in his playing days. From taking a stand on a social cause to wishing fellow celebrities on their birthdays, Sehwag has done it all.

Sehwag took to the micro-blogging site to send his wishes for Gary, with whom he had a hundred memories. The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ referred to the South African as a fantastic coach and a player and wished him luck on his birthday. Sehwag also mentioned that Kirsten is the only South African to win the cricket World Cup when he did so in 2011, as the coach of the Indian cricket team. The tweet read,

“Happy Birthday to a wonderful man, wonderful coach and the only South African to win a World Cup so far :), the wonderful @Gary_Kirsten.”

Team India tasted ultimate success under the leadership of Gary Kirsten, but the highlight of his tenure was the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team India lifted the World Cup Trophy that year by beating a valiant Sri Lankan side in the finals. Virender Sehwag was very much a part of that side, and the player shared a close bond with coach Gary. Kirsten was carried around the ground by players like Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli and Yusuf Pathan for his contributions.

Kirsten officially became the Indian team coach on 1st March 2008 and went to stay at the helm for three years. He was appointed the South African coach after moving on from India in 2011.
