WI vs IND: I Would Like To See Arshdeep Singh Replace Someone In The Bowling Attack For 3rd ODI, Says Parthiv Patel

Parthiv Patel, the former India wicket-keeper hopes to see pacer Arshdeep Singh included in the playing XI for the final dead rubber ODI against the West Indies. The left-arm pacer is yet to make his debut in the 50-over format after receiving his maiden call-up for the T20I series against England.

The 23-year-old was roped into the national squad following his exploits in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Arshdeep Singh failed to break into the playing XI during the home series against South Africa and the tour of Ireland. He finally made his highly-anticipated debut in the first T20I against England, where he ended with figures of 2-18 off 3.3 overs, including a maiden over.

Unfortunately for him, he could not play the next two matches as he wasn’t part of the squad as Jasprit Bumrah was back for the 2nd game, and for the third game, Umran Malik was preferred over him. He was part of India’s ODI squad against England and he was expected to make his debut in the first ODI, but an injury prior to the game ruled him out of contention for a potential debut.

Claiming that the inclusion of a left-arm pacer gives India’s bowling attack a slight advantage, Parthiv Patel said: “I would like to see Arshdeep replace someone in the bowling attack, maybe Thakur or Siraj.

“I want to see how Arshdeep copes with bowling 10 overs in the heat. We have all seen what he can do in T20 cricket. Having a left-handed bowler gives you a slight advantage.”

In the 2022 IPL season, Arshdeep Singh took 10 wickets in 14 games with an economy rate of 7.70 and an average of 38.50. He might not have many wickets in his credit, but the stats won’t reveal how he managed to make the death overs his own by delivering yorkers with great precision.

The youngster Arshdeep Singh played 3 matches for Punjab Kings in the 2019 season and was retained by the franchise ahead of the 2020 IPL auction. A year later, Arshdeep Singh continued his rise and went on to enjoy a fine run of form, taking his IPL wicket tally to 30 from 23 matches, leading PBKS to retain him ahead of the TATA IPL 2022 auction.

The tall bowler is known to use his 6’3” frame to his advantage. He picked 18 scalps in IPL 2021 in 12 games averaging a mere 19 last season. So far, he has 40 scalps in 37 games averaging 26.35 with a best of 5/32.

Parthiv Patel Wants Indian Batters To Convert Starts To Tons And Said Biggest Takeaway Of 2nd ODI Was Deepak Hooda Bowling 9 Overs

Parthiv Patel also noted that the Indian batters should take a cue from West Indies opener Shai Hope in terms of converting their bright starts. The 28-year-old scored a brilliant century in the second ODI, which was his 100th match in the format, to help the hosts post 311 on the board.

Parthiv Patel added: “The Indian batters are getting starts and playing well, but they should try to convert it as Shai Hope did for West Indies.”

Despite Shai Hope’s heroics, the hosts fell short in yet another close finish to succumb to a two-wicket loss at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain on Sunday (July 24).

India had to rely a lot on their spin bowling unit for wickets on Friday with Avesh Khan going for runs in his maiden ODI appearance. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was also dealt with well by West Indies, leading skipper Shikhar Dhawan to turn to Deepak Hooda’s part-time off-spin.

The all-rounder responded in style by coming into the attack inside the powerplay itself and claiming the opening breakthrough. Deepak Hooda ended up bowling nine crucial overs and was a handy match-up against the left-handed batters in the Caribbean batting outfit. He recorded respectable figures of 1/42 off his nine overs.

Chasing 312, Shreyas Iyer (63) and Sanju Samson (54) struck fine half-centuries, but it was Axar Patel’s unbeaten 35-ball 64 that ultimately made the difference as India scampered home with two balls to spare.

Opining that Deepak Hooda acts as a highly versatile option for India in the playing XI, Parthiv Patel said: “Biggest takeaway of the game was Hooda bowling those nine overs. He is giving India a lot of options being capable of playing at any position as an all-round option.”

The Men In Blue are scheduled to take on West Indies in the third and final ODI at the same venue on Wednesday (July 27). India has already claimed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
