Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal, on Thursday, has been handed a suspension by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with immediate effect under Anti-Corruption Code pending investigation. The suspension means that Akmal cannot take part in any cricket-related activity until the PCB’s Anti Corruption unit completes the investigation process.

Besides, PCB also confirmed in a press release that they will not make any further remarks with regards to Akmal as this is an ongoing investigation. Any development regarding this matter will be notified later.

“PCB have suspended Umar Akmal with immediate effect under Article 4.7.1* of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, which means he cannot take part in any cricket-related activity pending the investigation being carried out by PCB’s ACU #Cricket,” journalist Saj Sadiq tweeted.

According to Article 4.7.1, “the PCB considers that there are other exceptional circumstances relevant to a Participant (for example, where any relevant police authority has arrested and/or charged a Participant with an offence under any relevant criminal law in respect of facts or circumstances that may also constitute an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code), it, shall have the discretion, in circumstances where it considers that the integrity of the sport could otherwise be seriously undermined, to Provisionally Suspend the Participant pending the Anti-Corruption Tribunal’s determination of whether he/she has committed an offence.”

Akmal has represented Pakistan in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20Is, accumulating 1003, 3194 and 1690 runs respectively.

The right-handed batsman Akmal was considered the next big thing in Pakistan cricket. However, his inability to score runs consistently has often put him on the back foot and because of which, he has been in and out of the Pakistan national cricket team set-up.

Quetta Gladiators are allowed to apply for Umar Akmal’s replacement:

The 29-year-old batsman, who was part of the Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be replaced soon by the franchise.

“Quetta Gladiators are allowed to apply for Umar Akmal’s replacement in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020,” PCB added in a statement.

Recently, Akmal had escaped a ban for allegedly making infamous remarks to a trainer during a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. He had reported a match-fixing offer that approached him during Global T20 Canada League 2019.

Back then, Akmal said he had immediately reported the incident to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit.
