Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, the former India leg-spinner, has asked for the removal of pockets from players’ trousers.
As per him, this will prevent players from carrying anything onto the field.
It is to be noted that Sivaramakrishnan was on the panel of the committee which banned zippers on the pocket.
“Today, the umpires are quite lenient and allow drinks and other stuff as and when the players need it. Therefore, why do you need to carry anything in your pocket when your basic needs are taken care of through the 12th man?” he added.
It was one of the ways to tamper the condition of the ball by rubbing it on the zip,
“We stopped it during my tenure in the ICC cricket committee. The ICC’s cricket committee will address the issue and set a fine example for the future generation of cricketers,” he maintained.
On the third day’s play, Cameron Bancroft rubbed sandpaper on one side of the ball to rough it up. He was hiding the sandpaper in his pocket, which he carried onto the field following the lunch break.
When he came to know that he was caught, Bancroft tried to hide it in his crotch.
Later, he was fined 75% of his match fee by the world cricket by International Cricket Council (ICC).
However, Cricket Australia (CA) took a stern action against him and two other players, Steven Smith and David Warner.
Bancroft was handed a ban of nine months and was also banned from captaincy post for next 24 months.
Smith, who was the captain in the series, was handed a ban of one-year. He was also handed a ban of 24 months from captaincy post.
Warner, who was the chief plotter of the ‘Sandpaper Gate’, was banned for one year. He will never be considered for captaincy job in future.
Australia suspended the players with immediate effect and replaced them with Matt Renshaw, Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell for the fourth ongoing Test in Johannesburg.
Bancroft, on the other hand, lost his county cricket contract with Somerset.
