Predicted XI of Australia For First ODI Against New Zealand

The Australian team somehow succeeded in consoling the loss of the Test series against South Africa by winning the third Test match at Adelaide which was played with the pink ball. It was like hitting a ball for a six when six runs were required on the last ball as this win somehow deflated South African team despite the scoreline showing that they won the series but the Australia won the pink ball game, the main attention seeker in the Test series.

After gaining a moral victory against South Africa in Test series, the focus turns to One-day games where Australia will be up against the defending champions of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, New Zealand. If Australia is able to regain the cup, then it can extend Steve Smith’s captaincy whereas a loss can prove to be the last series for Steve Smith as skipper of Australia.

The first game of the series will be played at Sydney before both teams turn to Canberra for the second game. The third and final ODI will be played at the iconic Melbourne stadium. With Australian team announcing the 14-memebr squad a few days back, here is the probable XI for the first one-day game against New Zealand –

David Warner applauds fans.
David Warner applauds fans.

David Warner – He is an obvious choice for Australia as an opener in each and every format of the game whether it is a Test, T20I or an ODI. He will have the main responsibility to accelerate the innings from the first ball so as to help Australian team to get a good score on the board.

Aaron Finch: Teaming up with David Warner will be Aaron Finch who has the same batting style like Warner. He will have the same responsibility as David Warner to accelerate innings right from the first ball to help his team pile up big totals on board and put New Zealand under pressure. If both players are able to sustain for first 15 overs of the game, then this will increase Australia’s chance of winning significantly.

Steve Smith

Steve Smith – Next player to come in will be the skipper Steve Smith who is one of the best batsmen in the world currently. Smith will have a dual responsibility to play i.e. the role of a batsman and to lead the team from the front. He will have to hold the team to provide support to the batting line-up.

Travis Head.
Travis Head.

Travis Head – Travis Head might be favoured ahead of George Bailey in the Chappell–Hadlee series as Bailey could just score 114 runs in the South Africa series where Head edged past him by scoring 139 runs. With Head looking to seal his spot in the team, he might be chosen ahead of George Bailey with the captain having a futuristic approach.

Glenn Maxwell backed by David Warner
Glenn Maxwell backed by David Warner

Glenn Maxwell – The all-rounder will surely make a comeback in playing XI after missing from One-day squad in past few months. His addition to the team will help Australia in two ways as he can speed up the run-rate at any point of time and can also take few wickets with his spin bowling.

Mitchell Marsh celebrates a wicket.
Mitchell Marsh celebrates a wicket.

Mitchell Marsh – The all-rounder will retain his place in the team. Just like Maxwell, he too has a double role in the Australian team as he can score runs and also take few wickets with his pace bowling. He will be the third pacer for Australian team as Hilton Cartwright is not expected to make his debut on Sunday, December 4.

James Faulkner
James Faulkner

James Faulkner – The third all-rounder and probably the fourth pacer for Australia will be James Faulkner who will perform the same role as Maxwell and Marsh. He has developed a reputation of a great finisher for Australia and he will have the same role if Australia is asked to chase the target.

Matthew Wade stresses on his match winning abilities
Matthew Wade stresses on his match-winning abilities

Matthew Wade – He is the only wicket-keeper selected for the series so he is the automatic selection for Australia for the complete series. Wade made a comeback in the Test squad for the pink ball Test against South Africa whereas he also travelled with the team to South Africa. Wade can continue his stint with Australia until the time he continues to strike the form whereas any deviation in the form will be an end of the road for him.

Mitchell Starc is a different animal - Allan Donald

Mitchell Starc – The spearhead of Australian cricket team will have the responsibility to take wickets with the new ball. Pace and swing are the main weapons of him, these two things will play a crucial role in toppling the batting line-up New Zealand. He will be assisted by his new ball partner Josh Hazelwood.

Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazelwood – The second fast bowler for Australia will be Josh Hazelwood who will perform the role of the perfect partner of Mitchell Starc. Starc will have the responsibility to take tickets whereas Hazelwood will have the main role to bowl economically so as to prevent New Zealand from adding runs on the board. Hazelwood will trouble Kiwis with his extra swing.

Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa – Zampa is the only spinner front-line in this his team. He will get support from Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head who will assist him in turning the bowl but he will be the spin bowling head for Australia who will have the responsibility to weave a spin web against New Zealand.
