President Pranab Mukherjee confers the Khel Ratna award to Sania Mirza

On the National Sports Day Indian President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to World No. 1 tennis doubles player Sania Mirza at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday evening. She dedicated her award to her family and to the country.

“I feel very happy, privileged and honoured to receive this award and I would like to dedicate it to the people of India and my family,” Mirza told ANI in New Delhi.

Sania extended her gratitude to the Indian government and the Sports Ministry who nominated her for the award.

The prime sports award of the country is awarded to Sania despite the Karnataka High Court issued a notice to the government following a petition filed by Paralympian HN Girisha.

Mirza won the Wimbledon Grand Slam title for the first with Swiss legend Martina Hingis in June this year.

President Pranab Mukherjee will present the Khel Ratna and other sports awards on Saturday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as India celebrates August 29 as National Sports Day to mark the birthday of hockey legend Dhyan Chand.
