PREVIEW: West Indies Vs. New Zealand- 1st T20 International

Shashi / 06 July 2014

In the test series, West Indians were defeated by New Zealand by 2-1. New Zealand over-powered over the Caribbean men in the first and the final test. Now, after the conclusion of the test series, we are into the 2-match T20 series between them which starts tomorrow from 11.30PM IST. No doubt, New Zealand were the favourites in the Tests due to the classy batsmen they possess. But in the shortest version of the game, the Caribbean are the hot favourites. The 2012 World Champions will surely look for a series win in the T20 series.

West Indies team management stood up this time to take some big decisions. The Jamaican giant, Chris Gayle has been dropped from the T20 squad. This is a big decision surely. Chris Gayle is perhaps one of the most destructive players in the T20 format at present. But he is running through a bad patch. He failed to make a mark for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last IPL. His blistering innings of 80 runs off 46 balls in the second test did not able to impress the selectors and he was dropped. Also, Dwayne Bravo has not fully recovered from his injury and he too is not in the squad. For the first time, Christopher Barnwell and Darren Bravo have been included in the T20 squad and it is an opportunity for them. Also, Keiron Pollard makes a come back to the international team since last year and alongside him, the spinning mystery, Sunil Narine has made into the T20 squad after he failed to make into the test squad as he stayed in India for IPL final. West Indian line up does possess some explosive hitters in the likes of Dwayne Smith and also to some extent, Lendl Simmons and has good chance in taking a lead to the T20 tournament. Also the star bowler for West Indies in the T20 World Cup, Krishnmar Santokie is also included in the squad.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand squad is bubbling with confidence at the present and they possess a balanced team and will definitely try to continue with their winning run in West Indies. New Zealand has destructive batsmen in their line up in the likes of their skipper, Brendon McCullum and Corey Anderson and also they have the class of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor. Their bowling attack is also immensely strong. Two of their pacers are in the list of the top 10 bowlers of the ICC Test rankings at present. Tim Southee is in the 6th spot, followed by Trent Boult in the 9th spot. And  also they have Jimmy Neesham in their line up, who has been in prime for them in the test series and is  set to open the innings for them in the T20 series.

Overall, we await for a fantastic start to the 2-match T20 series which starts tomorrow at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica.
