Prithvi Shaw is going through a rough patch with the bat in IPL 2020 and was given a break in the previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders which the latter won by 59 runs. By winning the much-needed clash, KKR continues marching in the playoff race as they are placed at 4th in the IPL 2020 points table.
It was also seen in the last match that opener Prithvi Shaw was dropped from the playing XI of Delhi and Ajinkya Rahane opened instead. Prithvi Shaw had a great start to the season, where he smashed two half-centuries in the first four matches. He has 209 runs so far in IPL 2020 at a strike rate of 141.21.
Prithvi Shaw Given A Break Because Of Form But Ricky Ponting Will Continue To Back Him – Virender Sehwag
However, his form dipped as the season progressed and ended up registering two ducks in the last three innings. Hence, DC’s head coach Ricky Ponting decided to give him a break and the team went with the opener Ajinkya Rahane in his place. But Ajinkya Rahane fell for a first-ball duck and has scored only 25 runs in 4 matches, highest being 15.
“Ricky Ponting will continue to back Prithvi Shaw, but he has been in poor form in the past few games, and hence he has been given a break because of the form. Sometimes, a batsman develops a mindset that no matter what I am doing, it is not working in my favour. So, at the time, you either take a break yourself, or someone gives you a break, it works best for everyone,” he said on Cricbuzz.
His decision has been praised by former dashing batsman Virender Sehwag who believes it was a fine gesture to give an out of form player a much-needed break. Virender Sehwag also added that Ricky Ponting would continue to back the opener and believes that he will be back to form sooner after the break ends.
Virender Sehwag Requested Seniors For A Break But Was Made Captain Instead
Virender Sehwag also shared that he was asked to play despite his dipping form. He shared experience of the year 2006, where his form was not good but was asked by both Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly to keep playing for the team. He had to adamantly ask for a halt back then which was not granted as he was made the skipper instead.
“I share my own story when back in 2006, I was not able to score any runs. But still, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly kept me in the playing XI. I kept telling them that I am not being able to perform, I am not being able to score runs. So, give me a break. Instead of giving me a break, in one series, I was made the captain,” concluded ace opener.
Virender Sehwag played for India from 1999 to 2013 and scored more than 8000 runs in both Tests and ODIs. Meanwhile, in the IPL 2020, Prithvi Shaw has scored 209 runs from 10 matches averaging 20.9, highest being 66.
