Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer, who is the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy Cricket with 12038 runs in the competition, has heaped praise on Prithvi Shaw’s batting technique. He said that the youngster has the ability of Virender Sehwag, whose philosophy was to sight the ball and hit them for boundaries.
Prithvi Shaw burst into international scenes in 2018 after impressing with his aggressive batting at age-level competitions. At the age of 19, he played the first Test series against West Indies at home and went on to score a maiden century.
His explosive batting hogged the eyeballs and was instantly compared with former Test opener Sehwag. Wasim Jaffer has also now compared the youngster with Sehwag, saying that he is a special player and can hit shots like his senior.
If Prithvi Shaw gets going, he has the ability of Virender Sehwag I feel: Wasim Jaffer
“I think he is a special player, without a doubt. The shots he hits, if he gets going, he has the ability of Virender Sehwag I feel,” Jaffer told Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel.
However, Jaffar reckons that Prithvi Shaw needs to improve in some areas to get going for a longer period. He said that the 20-year-old needs to learn more about his game.
“He can completely demolish an attack. But somewhere I feel he needs to understand his game better, where he needs to take a backseat. I feel he got found out a little bit in New Zealand, got dismissed two times off a short delivery. He fell into their trap,” he said.
Apart from understanding the game, the veteran feels that Shaw should learn to lead a disciplined life on and off the filed which will benefit his game.
“I also feel that he needs to get more disciplined in his off-field life. Because I feel he has the game to succeed at the international level. But he needs to be a lot more disciplined outside cricket also,” the former Mumbai and Vidarbha batsman said.
Prithvi Shaw last played for India in the New Zealand series where he could not bring out his best. He lost his wicket early in the two-match series, scoring just 98 runs.
