Prospects for quarter finalists in Ranji Trophy 2014-15
In the very important domestic circuit of Ranji Trophy of Cricket, each team has to play 8 games to quality for the quarter finals. Based on the points earned (win 6-7, First Innings lead-3), top three teams from A & B groups and 2 teams from C group will enter the quarter finals. With the tournament coming to an end (as the seventh round has started today) of the league stage of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 season, let us take a look the prospects for quarter finalists in the tournament:
Group A: Karnataka is almost assured a place in the quarter finals as they have won 4 out of 5 matches and have garnered 28 points. Today, there match will be against Baroda at Mysore. By winning that game, Karnataka will go to the quarter finals in a confident mood. At the moment Tamil Nadu is placed 2nd on the points table with 16 points. They are playing with Mumbai at Chennai today. In the third place, Baroda is with 15 points. The fourth place is tied between Jammu & Kashmir and Mumbai with 11 points each. Bengal and Railways are tied with 10 points each. The other 2 team are not in contention. I think two of the three teams namely Tamil Nadu Mumbai and Baroda will qualify for the knockout.
Group B : Delhi is comfortably placed at 30 points and are almost in the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy 2014/2015. They have played some excellent cricket so far winning 4 out of 5 matches played so far. Today their match is against Maharashtra. In the points table, Punjab is placed on second with 19 points, third by Maharashtra with 16 points, Gujarat with 15 points, Rajasthan and Vidarbha tied with 11 points each, Haryana with 10 points. Odisha with 8 points and Sahurastra with 4 points are no contenders. Punjab has a chance to qualify for the quarter finals and the spot for third position is going to tight finish. The scene may be clearer after this round of matches.
Group C: Himachal Pradesh is leading with 23 points; the second place position is tied between Andhra Pradesh Assam with 21 points with Andhra Pradesh occupying the second place because of better net run rate. Hyderabad is in fourth place with 16 points. Rest of teams like Services, Kerala, Tripura, Jharkhand and Goa has remote chances of qualifying. In this group top 2 teams only will qualify for the quarter finals. I would expect HP and Assam or AP to reach the quarter finals.
