After the completion of league stages in the Ranji Trophy 2014/15 season the 8 teams have been decided to enter the quarter finals of the prestigious domestic tournament. My prediction of last week hold good even now. In Round 9 there have been some excellent bowling and batting performances from few individuals. Bharat the wicketkeeper of Andhra Pradesh scored the first triple century of the season, Hanuma Bihari of Hyderabad scored 263 and another 16 centuries were cored. In bowling department the best performance was of 7 wickets for 46 by Manglorkar of Baroda. Another 13 bowlers also took 5 plus wickets
Group A: In Group A Karnatka , Tamil Nadu and Mumbai have qualified for the quarter finals. In the first match Baroda played against Tamil Nadu. The key performers in this match for Baroda were Mangalorkar a new lad picked up 7 wickets. For Tamil Nadu Murali Vijay scored 104 in second innings to help Tamil Nadu win the match outright. The second match between MP VS Bengal ended in a tame draw MP earning 3 points.
In this match Shrivastva (151) and Jalaj Saxena scored 109 in the first innings for Madhya Pradesh. In the first innings MP bowler Rawat picked up 5 wickets. The third match was between Mumbai and Karnatka. In this match SD Lad and NA Patil scored 106 each in first innings for Mumbai and Harmeet Singh picked up 6-139. For Karnatka R Samarth scored a brilliant 180. Mumbai earned three vital points to qualify for knockout round. In the last match in group Railways played UP. This match was important for UP to avoid relegation. For Railways M Rawat scored 146 and RL Mali picked up 5 wickets. For Uttar Pradesh Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla picked up 5 wickets each in first and second innings respectively.
Group B: In Group B Delhi, Maharastra and Vidharbha have qualified for the quarter finals in this season. Gujarat and Vidharbha were equal on points (24 each) but Vidharbha qualified because of less number of losses as they had lost 2 games as against 3 of Gujarat. In Gujarat vs Harayana the match finished in one and half day only indicating the poor pitch status. In the first innings for Gujarat Ramesh Powar picked up 5-40.
For Harayana Amit Mishra picked 5-37. In the second innings Kalaria picked up 5 wickets to set up a nine 9 wicket victory for Gujarat. In the second match between Mahrastra and Vidharba , Maharashtra earned six points with an outright victory over Vidharbha. Maharastra’s Ankit Bawne scored a century and in bowling Domnic Jospeh picked 5 wickets for 19 runs and lead to victory. In the third match Odisha and Saurashtra fought to avoid relegation. Saurashtra is relegated to group “C” of the next year’s competition.
The only bright spot but futile effort of the match was Sudeep Tyagi’s 5 wickets haul in the first innings despite which Saurashtra lost the match. In the last match Delhi out -played Punjab by 90 runs to earn 6 points. In this match Manan Sharma picked up 5 wickets in the second to help Delhi secure a win.
Group C: In group C Assam and Andhra Pradesh have qualified. Andhra had defeated Goa by an innings and 136 runs to get 7 points. In this match Bharat the wicketkeeper scored a triple century and the opener MUB Sriram scored 144 not out. While in bowling D Silva Kumar picked 5 wickets to register an easy win. HP was the unlucky team to miss out on quarter final berth despite scoring 500 odd runs.
In this match P Dogra scored 137 and Bipul Sharma scored 176 to help score a huge 511 target for HP. While batting second Hyderabad team batsmen TD Agarwal scored 105 and Hanuma Vihari scored a tremendous 263 to help Hyderabad secure the first inning lead of 13 runs only. However theresult is inconsequential for both the teams. In other match between Jharkhand and Services SP Gautuam of Jharkhand scored 150 and SS Quadri picked up 6-102 in first innings to set up consolation win. In Assam vs Kerala match Amit Verma was only bright spot scoring 142 for Kerala in first innings.
