Quinton de Kock Dominates Annual CSA Awards

Quinton de Kock has walked away with five major awards at the annual Cricket South Africa Awards in Kyalami on Saturday (May 13). The 24-year old left-handed batsman has been named South African Cricketer of the Year in addition to winning four other titles. Apart from winning South African cricket’s premier accolade, de Kock was also named Test and ODI Cricketer of the Year. The other two titles were- Fans’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

De Kock’s haul was bettered only by Kagiso Rabada who had won six awards last year. The only awards he did not win for which he was eligible were the T20 International Player of the Year award that went to leg-spinner Imran Tahir the Award of Excellence that went to Temba Bavuma for his brilliant run out of David Warner during the Test series in Australia.

The keeper-batsman, nevertheless, matched the previous performances of his illustrious teammates- Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers who too had won five trophies each in the past.

De Kock began the season with a stunning innings of 178 in the season’s first One-Day International against Australia and had gone on to score 300 runs at an impressive average of exactly 60 and a strike rate of over 137 in that series. He scored two centuries and six fifties in the ODIs.  His performance in the white jersey was equally impressive as he notched up two more centuries, including a series-clinching 109 at Hobart as the Proteas enjoyed a highly successful season.

“Simply outstanding. What a year Quinton has had,” CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat said. “He has shown the maturity of a seasoned campaigner with performances that have really counted when needed most, often blowing away the opposition in the process.

“It is encouraging that for the second time in a row our premier award has gone to one of our young stars who is shining with distinction alongside our world-class senior players,” he added.

Lorgat further heaped praise on the team for their remarkable performance in the season. South Africa registered away Test series victories against Australia and New Zealand in addition to defeating Sri Lanka at home. They had also won ODI series against the same oppositions. The only series that did not go their way was the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka that the island nation won by a margin of 2-1.

“The way the Proteas have come through to rise up the ICC rankings, in meteoric fashion, has been quite brilliant and we now have a real team in the true sense of the word,” Lorgat said.
