New captain Ajinkya Rahane received the congratulatory greetings from Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, after the former was declared the skipper of the Indian team for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour.
Rahane is the 23rd ODI captain of India and the 6th captain from Mumbai. Tendulkar was the last Mumbai-kar to lead India back in 2000. So after him, Rahane gets the reins of Team India after a span of 15 years.
“I feel very happy for Ajinkya. He is a sincere and hard working cricketer. I have always been impressed with his commitment and dedication. I am sure he will give his best and give us a reason to be proud of him. I wish him all the best,” Tendulkar told PTI.
Rahane,27 was dropped from the first XI in the last two matches against Bangladesh as regular skipper Dhoni justified that Rahane struggles to rotate strike on slow pitches.
BCCI has decided to send a second tier team to the tour. A string of India regulars have been rested and a number of players have made their comeback to the Indian squad.
Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who made a comeback in the Test squad also made re-entry in the ODI team. Accompanying him are Robin Uthhappa, Manoj Tiwari, Murali Vijay and Karn Sharma. All these players have featured in the Indian squad but have been dropped subsequently. It’s a good chance for these players to show their talent and fix their place in the first XI.
India will be missing a regular keeper in this tour as Robin Uthhappa will have to do the honors of wearing the gloves.
Karnatak batsman Manish Pandey and young pacer Sandeep Sharma are making a debut in the national squad.
India is scheduled to play 3 ODIs and 2 T20 matches in Zimbabwe.
