Rajasthan Royals Hopeful of Great Things in IPL from Ashton Turner After Special Knock in Mohali

Until Sunday, Ashton Turner was not a known cricketing face to most of the cricketing world. However, on Sunday night his match-winning knock of 84 of 43 deliveries against India has made him a household name. His magical knock which included 5 fours and 6 sixes was instrumental in Australia levelling the 5 match series 2-2. There is no doubt that following that special knock, congratulatory tweets started pouring in from all across the world. His knock in just his 2nd ODI also earned him the Man of the Match Award.

When Turner walked out to the crease on Sunday, Australia were still 138 runs adrift of the victory target. Only 13 odd overs were left for the chase. The situation was a tricky one for the 26-time old all-rounder but he took it on his stride and smashed the Indian bowlers all around the park. Coming into the series, Ashton Turner had made a reputation of finishing of tight games in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Perth Scorchers.

Turner was the leading run-getter for Perth Scorchers scoring 378 runs from 14 matches. He had an overall strike rate of 132 throughout the tournament. His match-winning ability also caught the attention of Rajasthan Royals who bought Turner at his base price of Rs 50 lakhs during the IPL Auctions.

Turner and Moises Henriques were the only two Australian cricketers who were bought in the auction. After his selection in Rajasthan Royals, Turner was surprised himself and had also told an Australian newspaper that he had no idea that what made Rajasthan bid for him. “I have no idea why they picked me.”

Rajasthan Royals coach Paddy Upton feels the presence of Ashton Turner in the batting department will definitely give them depth especially when the franchise is looking for some quick runs.

“Turner has had a good season with Perth Scorchers. Turner has shown that he can remain calm under pressure which is an important quality to have in any format of the game. He is someone who has shown great finishing skills and can give the side those extra 30-40 runs in the end overs. That’s not all. He is also a great fielder which is always a plus,” Paddy Upton was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Meanwhile, earlier in the earlier, Australian current coach Justin Langer felt that his running between the wickets is second to none. Langer further compared Turner to Mike Hussey when it comes to judging crucial singles and doubles.

Justin Langer compares Ashton Turner to Mike Hussey

“When Mike (Hussey) came into Australian cricket, what almost got him a shot in the One-Day team was his running between the wickets. That might sound like the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard but his [Turner’s] running between the wickets is unbelievable. You see the way he finishes innings that he’s a good thinker and a really good leader,” Langer said.

Ashton Turner might not be a regular member of the Playing XI but he will surely play a part as the tournament progresses. IPL is always a big tournament and Turner would definitely like to make a name for himself from Rajasthan Royals.
