Team Rajkot, one of the two new franchises in the IPL has been named as the Gujarat Lions. The name of the team was announced at an event in New Delhi on Tuesday. Another major announcement for the team has been that IPL run machine Suresh Raina has been named as the skipper of the side. Raina has been named as the skipper ahead of New Zealand’s current captain Brendon McCullum.
Former Australian batsman and veteran T20 icon Brad Hodge has been appointed as the coach of the franchise. Hodge currently is in UAE, representing Gemini Arabians in the Masters Champions League (MCL). Hodge has tremendous experience in T20’s and has been an ambassador for the format after participating in T20 leagues of India, Australia, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and the West Indies.
The team owned by Intex Technologies was bought recently in a reverse bidding auction as a replacement to one of the two disbanded Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings. The Rajkot side chose five players in the auction process and the five include Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Bravo.
The side is full of explosive batsmen as the likes of Raina, Bravo and McCullum have been stalwarts in the IPL and their statistics are just an evidence of their ferocious abilities. The presence of four fully equipped all rounders will mean that the side also has a lot of variety in the bowling department along with brutal power hitting. Rajkot is surely the side to watch out for in the upcoming edition of the Vivo IPL.
