He did not get selected in the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against Australia, and the Bengal team management decided to call-up their star player to add weight to the team. Shami is expected to join the team on October 4 (Wednesday).
Shreevats Goswami, who was a member of the Board President’s XI squad for the practice game against Australia, has been selected to represent India A in the first three games against New Zealand A.
So the selectors had to announce a replacement and now, they are all set to avail the services of Shami.
The Indian pacer is not considered as a regular player when it comes to the limited-overs format, as Shami played his first ODI after a period of two years during the series against Windies in the month of June-July.
Though he has been part of the team in ODIs as well, he isn’t given a chance so often, of late. He was rested for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and only played one ODI against Australia, which indicates that he along with Umesh Yadav are only reliable candidates when it comes to the longest format of the game.

Shami played his last domestic game on March 20, 2017, when he made his comeback to competitive cricket for Bengal in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Before that, he was recovering from an injury which he suffered before the start of Mumbai Test against England last year. After his return to Bengal side, he was called to the Indian team for the final Test of the home season in Dharamsala but wasn’t given a place in the playing XI.
Shami is now excepted to play a couple of games for Bengal, before the start of the ODI series against New Zealand.
