It Must Be A Nightmare For Virat Kohli To See India Bowled Out For 36: Rashid Latif

Rashid Latif, former Pakistan captain believes it might be the mindset with which the Indians went out to bat on Saturday in the 3rd day of 1st Day-Night Test which may have cost them the game.

Virat Kohli-led Indian team suffered a major batting collapse in the 2nd innings in Adelaide, getting all out for their lowest ever Test score of 36. The hosts then chasing 90 runs went on to pick up an easy eight-wicket win.

Rashid Latif: There Are Days When Bowlers Hit Right Spot 100% Of The Time

India’s batting debacle against Australia on the third day of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide has become a major and a hot topic of discussion as a team which performed so well on the first two days of a Test rarely has faced such a disastrous outing on the 3rd day. India were leading by 62 runs on 2nd day by virtue of first innings lead but squandered the advantage to hand Australia the initiative. Several experts are still trying to figure out the reasons behind India’s disastrous outing with bat.

Rashid Latif recalled Pakistan’s 2002 Test against Australia in which Pakistan were bowled out for 59 and 53 against Australia at Sharjah. Legendary spinner Shane Warne had picked 8 wickets – 4 in each innings in the match to destroy Pakistan’s batting. Australia, led by Steve Waugh, had won the match by an innings and 198 runs. Rashid Latif said that there are days when bowlers tend to hit the right spot most of the times.

“These things happen; there are days when the bowlers just hit the right spot 100 percent of the time and the edges go straight to fielders. I think the collapse occurred because the Indian batsmen perhaps came out with a mindset to attack the bowling and dominate,” news agency PTI quoted Latif as saying

“But the pitch changed its behavior and I think on the first two days, it had some spongy bounce and was a bit slow, but then, the pitch had hardened up a bit and the ball skidded beautifully for the bowlers, which is why all the edges went into the fielders,” Latif added.

Josh Hazlewood picked 5 wickets while Pat Cummins picked 4 wickets as India registered their lowest ever Test score of 36. India were further dealt with another blow when pacer Mohammed Shami was ruled out from the remainder of Test series after suffering right-hand fracture while batting in second innings.

Rashid Latif: Virat Kohli Was Tempted To Chase Wide One To Get Rums On Board

The former Pakistan captain reasoned that captain Virat Kohli was tempted to chase a wide ball in the 2nd innings, after playing a sensible knock of 74 runs in the first innings.

“Virat Kohli played a very sensible knock in the first innings but the second time around, with wickets falling so quickly at the other end, even he was tempted to chase a wide one to get runs on the board. It must have been a nightmare for Kohli to see his team bowled out for just 36 runs,” Latif added.

India and Australia will meet again at MCG in the Boxing Day Test and this time India will be without Virat Kohli who heads back home as he awaits the birth of the first child. Ajinkya Rahane will lead in his absence. India may bring 4 changes handing debuts to Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill while Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul will play Tests after a gap as injured Mohammed Shami, out of form Prithvi Shaw and Wriddhiman Saha, homebound Virat Kohli makes way for the quartet.
