Ravi Shastri has resigned as a member of the Cricket Committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The former Team India director has been a member of the panel as a media representative for the last six years.
For the time being , there is no indication that his decision to resign has been influenced by BCCI’s decision to appoint Anil Kumble as India’s head coach ahead of him. According to reports, he was contemplating the idea of resigning quite some time back and the former team director has already written to ICC chairman Sashank Manohar . Shastri is understood to told the ICC president that he has spent enough time in the committee and it could be time for someone else to take the role.
Shastri missed the committee’s meeting, which was held on 2-3 June at Lords this year, due to his commentary assignments. However, the former cricketer confirmed about sending in his resignation but did not give any other details.
Post Kumble’s appointment, reports have surfaced that Sourav Ganguly could take his post at ICC, but Kumble expressed his desire to continue as ICC’s cricket committee’s chairman.
“There is absolutely no conflict of interest. All things have been addressed. There is the ICC Cricket Committee, for which I will not be able to dedicate as much time. However, I see no reason why I cannot continue as its chairman. There are other national coaches like Darren Lehmann, Andrew Strauss and (Rahul) Dravid (all work for their respective boards in different positions),” Kumble was quoted as saying.
However, an official statement has not been made on this matter and it also depends on whether the former Indian leg-spinner is keen to multi-task as it could be difficult to manage his commitments having taken up the full-time role with India. The final decision will be known after the ICC Annual Conference which ends on July 2.
