On the day former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly turned 44, he revealed that Ravi Shastri was offered the batting coach role to work along with Anil Kumble.
Ganguly was in the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) along with Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman. They kept their trust in their former teammate Anil Kumble who has taken more than 900 international wickets. Shastri, who was team director of the Indian team for 18 months, was ignored for the head coach job that didn’t go well with the former World Cup winner.
Shastri was unhappy. He expressed his disappointment and was angry over Ganguly, who left the interview board when Shastri came online to give his interview. Ganguly had left the interview citing that he has a meeting at CAB.
Shastri’s constant vent against Ganguly on the media made angry Sourav Ganguly he came back and lashed out Shastri.
In the last couple days, the battle seems got over, but Ganguly in an exclusive interview with the Mid Day revealed that Shastri was offered the chance to work under Kumble as the team’s batting coach.
“Enough has been said (on his personal duel with Shastri). I do not wish to discuss anything further,” Ganguly said. “(But)Yes, we offered Ravi the Indian team’s batting coach post.”
Shastri since 2014 England tour worked for team India. Under him, India also produced good results. But Shastri didn’t want to work under anyone so he rejected the offer.
Abhay Sharma was appointed the fielding coach of the India and Sanjay Bangar was the batting coach. But India didn’t name any bowling coach.
It is expected that head coach Anil Kumble will help bowlers for the West Indies tour.
There is a talk that in near future Zaheer Khan could be appointed as a bowling coach.
But Ganguly said he is not aware of any such development.
“I have no knowledge about this. BCCI will have to see whether Zaheer is available for 365 days or not,” Ganguly said.
