Kumble had pipped Shastri to become team India’s head coach in 2016. The update also left Shastri surprised and he blamed Sourav Ganguly, a member of CAC, for not being appointed as head coach. Kumble’s stint was a successful one but he resigned from the position due to untenable relation with captain Virat Kohli.

In 2017, Shastri joined the race in the second attempt and was appointed as team India’s head coach for the first time. In 2019, BCCI again invited the applications for the post and Shastri was retained for the next two years.
