Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja led India’s charge on the third day of the first Test against New Zealand.
Except for the first session of the opening day, the Indian team remained on the backfoot for the first two days. From 154 for 1, the team Indian team had a dramatic collapse and were reeling at 277 for 9. But a 41-run partnership between Ravinder Jadeja and Umesh Yadav took India to a respectable total as they finished on 318.
New Zealand batsmen compounded more misery on the hosts as they ended the second day on 152 for the loss of only 1 wicket. After the end of day’s play, India’s batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that it was a matter of one wicket before the Indian team gets back into the match and Indian spinners proved him right as the visitors lost their remaining 9 wickets after adding only 110 runs to their overnight score. R Ashwin started the collapse by dismissing well set Kane Williamson and Tom Latham but Ravinder Jadeja stole the show with his fifth five-wicket.
The visitors went to lunch 238 for 5 and added 17 more runs without losing any wicket. But then a dramatic collapse saw them losing their remaining wickets for only 5 runs. Ashwin drew the first blood when he dismissed the well-set Mitchell Santner for 32 off 107 balls. After that, it was all Jadeja show. He dismissed Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi lbw off successive balls. He missed his hat-trick but two balls later he picked his fifth wicket when he had Trent Boult caught brilliantly by Rohit Sharma at silly point.
Enjoy the brilliant spell:
